MATT HAIMOVITZ + OXINGALE + PENTATONE = Spielwiese für Neues

15 Jahre nach Gründung sind MATT HAIMOVITZ’ Grammy-prämierte OXINGALE Records als Kooperation mit dem niederländischen Label PENTATONE nun auch in Europa vertreten.Am 19. August erscheint Orbit, ein Zusammenschnitt aus rund 70 Jahren zeitgenössischer Musikgeschichte für Solo-­Cello, darunter zehn Weltersteinspielungen.

Anfang 2016 folgt eine CD mit Neukompositionen zu J.S. Bachs Cello Suiten. Das niederländische Label PENTATONE und das amerikanische OXINGALE Records stehen seit langem für Innovation und höchsten Qualitätsanspruch. Nun beginnen beide Labels eine Kooperation und starten die PENTATONE OXINGALE SERIES unter künstlerischer Gestaltung des amerikanischen Cellisten Matt Haimovitz. Haimovitz wurde in den 90er Jahren als jüngster Exklusivkünstler der Deutschen Grammophon bekannt, bevor er seinen „Wunderkind-­Status“ an den Nagel hängte und beschloss, eine 50 Städte-Tour durch die USA zu unternehmen und den Konzertsaal gegen Pubs, Punkclubs und Pizza Palours auszutauschen. Im Anschluss gründete er als einer der Pioniere der Klassikszene sein eigenes Label, OXINGALE Records, welches seither mit diversen Grammy’s ausgezeichnet wurde.

Neben dem Kernrepertoire der Cello-­Literatur präsentiert Haimovitz auf OXINGALE Records zeitgenössische Komponisten und mutige Konzeptalben. Er überschreitet in seiner Kunst die Grenzen der in der klassischen Musik üblichen Aufführungspraxis, tritt mit Vehemenz für zeitgenössische Musik ein und stellt außergewöhnliche Programme zusammen. Eine Anthologie dieser Alben legt Haimovitz nun mit der aktuellen CD-­Veröffentlichung Orbit vor, die Werke aus den Alben Anthem (2003), Goulash! (2005), After Reading Shakespeare (2007), Figment (2009) und Matteo (2011) beinhaltet, ergänzt um Philip Glass’ Werk Orbit und ein Arrangement des Beatles-­Klassikers Helter Skelter durch Luna Pearl Woolf. Orbit umfasst damit die Musik von mehr als 20 Komponisten -­ 15 davon noch lebend – und bietet ein Kaleidoskop an Werken für Solo-­Cello der vergangenen 70 Jahre, darunter zehn Ersteinspielungen. Die Dreier-­CD‐Box erscheint am 19. August 2015.

Im Rahmen der begonnenen Kooperation werden bei PENTATONE ferner nach und nach Aufnahmen aus dem Bestand von OXINGALE auch in Europa veröffentlicht, zudem sind langfristig mehrere Neuerscheinungen pro Jahr geplant.

Bereits im April 2015 erschien als Auftakt der transatlantischen Kooperation mit dem Album BEETHOVEN, period. ein Quergang durch die Sonaten und Variationen für Fortepiano und Violoncello von Ludwig van Beethoven, gespielt von Matt Haimovitz und Christopher O’Riley auf Originalklang-­Instrumenten. In Planung für die nächsten Monate sind J. S. Bachs The Cello Suites According to Anna Magdalena Anfang 2016 sowie das Projekt Shuffle mit Werken von Igor Stravinsky und Leos Janácek.

Bereits 1984 gab Matt Haimovitz im Alter von dreizehn Jahren sein Solo-­Debüt mit dem Israel Philharmonic unter Leitung von Zubin Mehta. Sein Debüt in der Carnegie Hall folgte als Einspringer für seinen Lehrer, den legendären Leonard Rose, in Schuberts Streichquintett an der Seite von Isaac Stern, Mstislav Rostropovich, Pinchas Zukerman und Shlomo Mintz. Über seine eigenen Erfolge hinaus fungiert er auch als Mentor einer preisgekrönten Klasse junger Cellisten an der McGill University’s Schulich School of Music in Montreal.

MATT HAIMOVITZ + OXINGALE + PENTATONE = Playground for the  New

15 years after its inception, Matt Haimovitz’ GRAMMY®-winning OXINGALE RECORDS is now also represented in Europe through a cooperation with Dutch label PENTATONE. August 19 marks the release of Orbit, a compilation of 70 years of contemporary history of music for solo cello, including ten world premiere recordings.

This will be followed up in early 2016 with a CD of new compositions to accompany JS Bach’s cello suites. The Dutch label PENTATONE and the American OXINGALE RECORDS have long stood for innovation and highest quality standards. Now both labels are beginning a co-operation, starting the PENTATONE Oxingale Series under the artistic guidance of the American cellist Matt Haimovitz. Haimovitz became known in the 90s as the youngest ever exclusive artist for Deutsche Grammophon, and before he shed his “Wunderkind” status he decided to embark on a 50 city tour of the US including not only concert halls, but also pubs, punk clubs and pizza parlors. Shortly thereafter, he became a pioneer of the classical music scene by founding his own label, OXINGALE RECORDS, which has since been awarded several GRAMMYS®.

In addition to the core repertoire of cello-composition, Haimovitz also presents contemporary composers and bold concept albums at OXINGALE RECORDS. In his art, Haimovitz crosses the boundaries of the conventional practices of classical music performance, as he is an ardent advocate for contemporary music, and he puts together unusual programs. With his current release Orbit, Haimovitz now presents an anthology of the albums Anthem (2003), Goulash! (2005), After Reading Shakespeare (2007), Figment (2009), and Matteo (2011), supplemented by Philip Glass’ works Orbit and an arrangement by Luna Pearl Woolf of the Beatles classic Helter Skelter. Orbit thus contains the music of more than 20 composers – 15 of whom are still alive – and offers a kaleidoscope of works for solo cello of the past 70 years, including ten original recordings. The three-CD box set will be released on August 19, 2015.

As part of this new cooperation PENTATONE will also gradually release recordings from OXINGALE’s collection in Europe, as well as multiple new releases per year for the long term.

This transatlantic cooperation was kicked off in April 2015 with the release of the album BEETHOVEN, Period – a cross cut through Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonatas and Variations for cello and pianoforte, recorded by Matt Haimovitz and Christopher O’Riley on original period instruments. Among the plans for the coming months are JS Bach’s Cello Suites According to Anna Magdalena in early 2016, as well as the Shuffle project with works by Igor Stravinsky and Leos Janácek.

This was followed by his debut at Carnegie Hall as a stand-in for his teacher, the legendary Leonard Rose. He substituted for Mr. Rose in Schubert’s String Quintet alongside Isaac Stern, Mstislav Rostropovich, Pinchas Zukerman and Shlomo Mintz.
